Discography of D.O. MISIANI & SHIRATI JAZZ

Daniel Owino Misiani, more than any other Kenyan musician, has helped to develop and advance the modern guitar dance music of the Luo people known as "Benga." Born in 1940, he founded his first band, the Victoria Boys, in 1965. The group's name was changed to the Shirati Luo Voice sometime in the late '60s or early '70s, and has undergone a number of appellation and personnel changes over the years, usually under the name Shirati Jazz or some variation thereof. One thing that has remained the same is the music's straight-ahead melodies, wiggling bass lines and wry, concise lyrics about everyday situations and personalities.

D.O. Misiani & Shirati Jazz have gained a growing number of devotees throughout the world, especially since the release of several albums in the U.K. and U.S. in the late 1980s. While benga music as a genre has faded somewhat in recent years, they continue to be a working band and retain their loyal following.

Most of the information in this discography of D.O. Misiani & Shirati Jazz was graciously supplied by Doug Paterson, who has produced a number of recordings of East African music, including "The Nairobi Beat" on Rounder. For more information on East African music, go to his East African Music Page . I am also greatly indebted to Michael Kieffer, who provided crucial information on early 45's.

-- While this recording was pressed in Kenya, the sleeve was printed in Nigeria. This and other Kenyan recordings received wide distribution in that country, testimony to the mid-seventies benga craze in Eastern Nigeria. At the same time, guitar-based sounds like Ikwokirikwo and Panco, stylistically quite similar to Benga,  were supplanting the older, horn-based Nigerian highlife styles. Is there a connection? It seems likely!

Early 1980s?
Mwalimu D.O. Misiani & Orch. Central [K] Africa Jazz
Mary Atieno / Wuoth Ma Nakuru (7" 45; Omoro Ja Mirima [Nairobi] MOJA 4)

Misiani's relationship with the Orchestra Central (K) Africa Jazz is not exactly clear. Was it a "side project" or an independent group that he occasionally played with? Doug Paterson writes, "...I'm not aware of any relationship between Central K Africa Jazz and Shirati. As I recall, Central K was one of George Ramogi and George Ojijo's bands. They were much more Luo rumba than benga..." At any rate, the group had two songs on 1975's "Great Hits From Nairobi Vol. 2" (Sungura SGL 116), above, both of which are pure benga. One of them, "Lala Salama," also appears on 1988's "My Life and Loves" (Discafrique AFRI LP 004), below, credited to D.O. Misiani & Shirati Jazz. - J.B.

1983
D.O.7 Shirati Jazz
I'm Tired, Pt. 1 / I'm Tired, Pt. 2 (7" 45; Bwana Otieno Weche [Nairobi] PIC 3)

This amusing novelty record is an oddity, being that Side 1 is in Swahili, Side 2 in English, rather that Duoluo, the language of the vast majority of Shirati Jazz records. A fellow is having an argument with his girlfriend about her constant financial demands, specifically for a brand new "motorcar." He says "next you will want me to buy you a steamship or an aeroplane!" The girlfriend repliesÊ that she doesn't think her desire for a "motorcar" is unreasonable at all, and that if he can't satisfy her demands, "Mark the hell out of my way!" and something like "Nili Wewe!" At this point all the musicians in the studio spontaneously crack up. - J.B.

[A] Rose Apondi / Dorcas Akinyi / Milly Auma / Julius Ouma
[B] Lucus Auko / Alex Ojwang / Joswa Omucho / Nyochuna Akoth
-- D.O. Misiani is not on this recording. His absence from this, "Rose Atieno" (Polydor POLP 580) and "Benga Beat" (World Circuit WCB 003), above, is apparently not due to any disagreement with Shirati Jazz. Doug Paterson writes, "[about 'Benga Beat,' recorded in the UK]...The Kenyans wouldn't give him a passport claiming he was Tanzanian. I don't think there was any problem between Misiani and his band and they couldn't have called it Shirati without Misiani's permission. Otherwise, you would have seen Shirati Stars or Les Shirati or something like that. It might have been that Misiani was mad at Polygram about something or it might be that he just wanted to let his musicians publish some of their own songs. All the songs on the two LPs are by the sidemen, not Misiani..." - J.B.
